PPDS labels for Natasha’s Law, and full prepacked labels too
Choose the type for each product. Labelwise won’t let you sign off a label while an allergen is unconfirmed, a detail is missing or its text would fall below the legal minimum size.
PPDS label
For food you pack and sell yourself, like sandwiches in your chiller or cakes on the counter.
- The name of the food
- Every ingredient, heaviest first
- Allergens emphasised in the list
Prepacked label
For food you pack for another business to sell, like the cakes you supply to a café.
- Everything on a PPDS label
- Nutrition per 100g
- Net weight, date mark, storage and address
Labelwise never guesses an allergen. Every one comes from a supplier spec or your own declaration, with a name and a date beside it, and nothing prints until you sign it off.
Questions
Good to know before you start
PPDS or prepacked: which do I need?
As a rule of thumb, food you pack before it’s ordered and sell yourself, from your own premises, stall or van, is prepacked for direct sale (PPDS). Under Natasha’s Law it needs its name and a full ingredient list with the allergens emphasised.
Food you pack for another business to sell is prepacked, and needs more: usually nutrition, plus net weight, a use by or best before date, storage instructions and your name and address. Selling online or by post has rules of its own too.
You choose the type for each product. If you’re not sure which applies, the Food Standards Agency’s guidance (opens in a new tab) or your local authority can tell you.
What counts as a product?
Each thing you sell with its own label counts once, however many versions it goes through. Recipes, ingredients, suppliers and the people on your team don’t count. Archive a product you no longer sell, such as a seasonal cake, to free up its place: its labels stay on file, and you can restore it when it comes back.
What do my customers see when they scan the QR code?
On Growth and Unlimited, a QR code on a product’s labels opens its product page, in your own colours and logo: the allergens, the ingredients with allergens in bold, the nutrition and how to contact you, exactly as that label was signed off, so it always matches the pack.
Your business page lists everything you sell, each product opening its page, so its address can go on your website or a sign by the till. You choose which products get a QR code, and pages for labels you’ve printed stay up whatever plan you’re on.
Which labels and printers does it work with?
Avery L7165, L7169 and L7163 sheets in any inkjet or laser printer, plain A4 paper you cut along the lines, and Dymo 99014 rolls for a Dymo LabelWriter. You can add your own label sizes too.
A one-page alignment test lines your printer up with your labels. If a label’s text won’t fit at the legal minimum size, Labelwise asks you to choose a larger label rather than shrinking it.
Am I legally covered?
No software can promise that, and Labelwise doesn’t. As the food business, you stay responsible for your labels. We make getting them right the easy part.
Labelwise only uses allergens you’ve confirmed from a supplier spec or your own declaration, won’t let you sign off a label while anything is unconfirmed or missing, and records who signed off each one and when, ready to show an inspector.
What happens to my labels if I cancel?
They’re yours to keep. After your plan ends you can still see, print and download every label you’ve signed off, as PDFs with a spreadsheet of who signed off each one and when. We never hold your records back. You just can’t make changes until you choose a plan again.
Do I need a card to try it?
No. The 14-day free trial unlocks everything without one. Choose a plan whenever you’re ready: you keep the trial days you have left, and your card is first charged when the trial ends.
